Teen Questioned By Secret Service

`Julia Wilson, a straight-A student at McClatchy High School, spends a lot of her free time on the networking website MySpace.

Until a few months ago the 14-year-old moderated her own group called “Let’s Stab Bush.”

That’s where Wilson posted a cartoon picture of President Bush which included the words “kill Bush” and showed him being stabbed in the hand.

She caught the attention of the Secret Service, which showed up on Wednesday to question her about the picture.

Two agents pulled her out of class and interviewed her for 15 minutes to see if she was really a threat to President Bush.’

PM gives strong backing to nuclear power

`Prime Minister John Howard has given his strongest support yet to the use of nuclear power in Australia, backing the local development of the “clean” energy industry.

An expert taskforce is due to release a draft report next month on the merits of nuclear power and whether Australia should be thinking of value-adding options, such as enrichment, for its vast uranium stores.

But before the experts have even had their say, Mr Howard has indicated he believes nuclear power is an industry Australia should be developing.’

Antimatter and matter combine in chemical reaction

`Mixing antimatter and matter usually has predictably violent consequences – the two annihilate one another in a fierce burst of energy.

But physicists in Geneva have found a new way to make the two combine, at least briefly, into a single substance. This exceptionally unstable stuff, made of protons and antiprotons, is called protonium. [..]

Researchers led by Evandro Rizzini at Italy’s University of Brescia believe that some of the antiprotons reacted with ionised molecules of ordinary hydrogen, stealing away a proton. These proton-antiproton systems lasted microseconds at most, but that was long enough for many of them to drift away from the core of the experiment before exploding.’

The Ultimate Linux Lunchbox

`In this article, we describe the construction of the Ultimate Linux Lunchbox, a 16-node cluster that runs from a single IBM ThinkPad power supply but can, as well, run from an N-charge or similar battery. The lunchbox has an Ethernet switch built-in and has only three external connections: one AC plug, one battery connector and one Ethernet cable. To use the lunchbox with your laptop, you merely need to plug the Ethernet cable in to the laptop, supply appropriate power-even the power available in an airplane seat will do-and away you go, running your cluster at 39,000 feet.’

U.S. troops “unlawfully killed” Terry Lloyd

`One of Britain’s most experienced journalists was unlawfully killed by U.S. soldiers in Iraq, an inquest into his death ruled on Friday, prompting calls for the perpetrators to be tried for war crimes.

Veteran war correspondent Terry Lloyd, 50, who worked for ITN, was killed in March 2003 in southern Iraq as he reported from the front line during the first few days of the U.S.-led invasion.

“He was fired on by American soldiers as a minibus carried wounded people away,” Coroner Andrew Walker said at the conclusion of the inquest, which U.S. soldiers declined to attend.’

Criticizing Cheney to His Face Is Assault?

‘”I didn’t even know he was in town,” Howards says. “He was walking through the area shaking hands. Initially, I walked past him. Then I said to myself, ‘I can’t in good conscience let this opportunity pass by.’ So I approached him, I got about two feet away, and I said in a very calm tone of voice, ‘Your policies in Iraq are reprehensible.’ And then I walked away.” [..]

But the Secret Service did not take kindly to his comment.”About ten minutes later, I came back through the mall with my eight-year-old son in tow,” Howards recalls, “and this Secret Service man came out of the shadows, and his exact words were, ‘Did you assault the Vice President'”

Here’s how Howards says he responded: “No, but I did tell Mr. Cheney the way I felt about the war in Iraq, and if Mr. Cheney wants to be shielded from public criticism, he should avoid public places. If exercising my constitutional rights to free speech is against the law, then you should arrest me.”

Which is just what the agent, Virgil D. “Gus” Reichle Jr, proceeded to do.’

Earth’s wobble killed off mammal species

`Mammalian species are known to last an average of 2.5 million years before being snuffed out, but nobody had been able to figure out why. The reason, it turns out, may be linked to regular wobbles in Earth’s orbit.

Jan van Dam from Utrecht University in the Netherlands and colleagues reached this conclusion after studying the fossil record of rodents from central Spain over a 22-million-year span. This showed a link between rodent extinction events and the climate record.’

Mother Says Daughter’s Class Picture Was Doctored

`A local family is outraged by a school photo. When the pictures came back from the studio, a seven-year-old girl’s image appeared to have been doctored to give her cleavage.

The debate is whether the photo just has a very strange shadow or it’s been digitally altered by someone.

“It’s just bad. It’s horrible. She’s my baby, not for somebody to look at her like that. She’s seven, she’s not an adult,” said the girl’s mother, Jenn Truhe.’

Graphic MySpace Page Gets Officer Suspended

`Love is a 26-year-old police officer in Wichita Falls, Texas. And now he’s been indefinitely suspended, because authorities are concerned that the images and statements on his Web site could undermine public confidence in the police department.

Love’s Web page has been removed. But it was listed under the name Leatherface. The Wichita Falls Times Record News said Love’s site included several graphic images of dismembered women as well as vivid pictures of a nude woman eating entrails and a bare-chested woman with the word “Loath” carved into her flesh.

As Love’s occupation, the site listed “super hero/serial killer” and he listed “Pizza, human flesh (barbecue only)” as his favorite meal.’

Gravely ill woman kills son, is freed, kills husband

`A Bulgarian woman who killed her son was released from prison because of terminal cancer. She then went home and killed her husband, police said Tuesday.

The 57-year-old was sentenced to 15 years in jail for killing her 29-year-old son with a garden hoe in April 2005 while he was sleeping.

Last month, authorities judged her to be in the final stages of cancer and let her go home, where she stabbed her husband in the throat with a knife.

“It was established she was in the last stage of cancer, she had it all over her body,” said a spokeswoman for the Bourgas regional police.

“They presumed she was feeling bad and she would treat herself and rest. But nothing of the kind. She got aggressive and … she killed her husband.”‘

Inmates Smuggle In Cell Phones with Ease

`Three weeks ago, Maryland state Sen. Ed DeGrange was sitting at his desk when the phone rang. The caller was an inmate from a nearby prison with a list of complaints. But he wasn’t calling from the prison pay phone. He was calling from a mobile phone in his cell.

DeGrange says his first thought when he heard that was, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“He even went as far as to leave a number,” he adds. [..]

Last month, a warden in Texas also got a call — from the mother of one of his inmates. She was calling to complain that her son was getting poor cell-phone reception inside the prison.’

On Tuesday, Frandino gave the Charlestowne Academy students permission to use the trash can. When a girl used the bathroom, other girls held up jackets to shield the view while other students stood on the opposite wall with their backs turned, school district spokesman Jerry Adams said. Boys also did the same for the boy.

“It’s not acceptable,” associate superintendent Patricia Yandle told the newspaper.’

Bolivia mines officials replaced as fighting stops

`The violence began Thursday morning, when hundreds of miners belonging to independent cooperatives stormed the state-owned Huanuni mine, demanding more access to its tin deposits. State-employed miners counterattacked to regain control of the mine and the groups exchanged gunshots and dynamite.

Miners from both sides, some only in their teens, threw dynamite and homemade explosives at each other from ridge to ridge, sometimes separated by no more than 50 feet (15 meters).

On Friday morning, members of the miners’ cooperative rolled three tires packed with explosives down the side of the mountain toward town, causing an enormous explosion.’

Swede plans to put little red cottage on the moon

`Not content with having them dotted all over the countryside, Sweden is now considering putting a little red cottage on the moon. The idea, first conjured up by the artist Mikael Genberg seven years ago, may become reality with the help of the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC), according to N24.

The state agency SSC has carried out a technical study showing that it is indeed possible to put a little red cottage on the moon.

LSD treatment for alcoholism gets new look

`Some participants still have not had a drink 40 years after the trials. For the past five years, Dr. Erika Dyck has been unearthing some intriguing facts related to a group of pioneering psychiatrists who worked in Saskatchewan, Canada in the ’50s and ’60s.

Among other things, the University of Alberta history of medicine professor has found records of the psychiatrists’ research that indicate a single dose of the hallucinogenic drug LSD, provided in a clinical, nurturing environment, can be an effective treatment for alcoholism.

Her findings are published this month in the journal Social History of Medicine.’

Restaurant workers spice officers’ burgers with pot

‘Three fast-food restaurant workers were taken into custody Sunday evening after two police officers discovered that the hamburgers they had ordered had been sprinkled with marijuana.

The Isleta Police Department officers had eaten about half of their burgers from a Burger King restaurant in Los Lunas before realizing that something was wrong. Opening the burgers, they discovered marijuana sprinkled on top of the meat.

“One of the officers, when he was eating his hamburger, he said, ‘This thing tastes like it has marijuana in it,'” said Lieutenant Joseph Sanchez of the Los Lunas Police Department. “And that’s when he opened it up to see what was inside.”‘

Canada troops battle 10-foot Afghan marijuana plants

`Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy — almost impenetrable forests of marijuana plants 10 feet tall.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana. [..]

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

“A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those [forests] did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action,” Hiller said dryly.’
