`Police cracking down on flying kites arrested more than 1,400 people over three days at a springtime festival held across eastern Pakistan, an official said.

The kite ban was imposed by provincial authorities after seven people were fatally slashed by kite strings that had been reinforced with wire or glass fibre in the run-up to the annual Basant festival.

While some people resisted the ban, there was only a sprinkling of kites over the city today — a small fraction of the thousands of kites seen in previous years.’

Madrid Bombings Show No al-Qaida Ties

‘A two-year probe into the Madrid train bombings concludes the Islamic terrorists who carried out the blasts were homegrown radicals acting on their own rather than at the behest of Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network, two senior intelligence officials said.

Spain still remains home to a web of radical Algerian, Moroccan and Syrian groups bent on carrying out attacks — and aiding the insurgency against U.S. troops in Iraq — the Spanish intelligence chief and a Western official intimately involved in counterterrorism measures in Spain told The Associated Press.’

“I have never seen anyone bite themselves with the ferocity that he did,” Edward Petch said.’

Indian cult kills children for goddess

`A painted image of the Hindu goddess Kali is propped up against a stone in the dirt, her long red tongue goading terrified worshippers into submission. From one of her eight flailing arms a severed head dangles, her neck is adorned by a necklace of bleached human skulls.

There are bloodstains on the cracked wall behind the terrible postcard-size image and, around the dark room, splattered gore on the heavy wooden furniture. These dark marks bear witness to a child sacrificed in the name of the abominable goddess.’

Cat stomped to death in film draws outrage

`Cyber sadists have figured out a way to profit from cruelty to small creatures, and animal rights activists say it’s high time China enacts tough laws to stamp out such abuse.

Several Websites have cropped up recently offering videos and still photos of dogs, cats, rabbits and toads being stomped to death by a sexy woman wearing stockings and high heels.

These images are usually linked with more typical sadomasochistic fare consisting of a female in stiletto heels tramping on the chest of a man. [..]

Animal “snuff” videos were posted on these sites for sale at 15 yuan (US$1.87) each. There were bulletin boards for fetish fans, who could even join a group called the International Crushing Association.’

Jury in murder trial told of sex party at Boynton Beach motel

`After a night of drinking in June 2004, Lisa Merola and her boyfriend hooked up with Michael Trammell and his wife for a “swinger’s party” in Trammell’s tiny room at a Boynton Beach motel.

Merola disappeared the following day, prosecutor Aleathea McRoberts said, after her boyfriend reported last seeing her in Trammell’s vehicle. Merola’s partially nude body — covered with Trammell’s DNA — was found in Gulfstream Park near Boynton Beach on June 13, 2004. Authorities say Trammell strangled her. A Palm Beach County jury began hearing the second-degree murder case on Thursday.

Trammell, 34, claims that the couples engaged in various sex acts for hours that night, until Merola’s boyfriend, Greg Winterbottom, wanted to leave, McRoberts said. Winterbottom said the party ended after a brief period, when Merola became visibly repulsed by the then 460-pound Trammell, according to McRoberts.’

Snead said in an interview that he didn’t realize at first it was Bowman giving the order and continued working on his friend. Bowman repeated his command to get away, saying that Green was HIV positive, then grabbed Snead by the shoulders and told him to sit on the curb, Snead said.’

Woman pleads guilty in cheese hit man plot

`A woman pleaded guilty Monday to attempted murder charges for trying to hire a hit man to rob and kill four men for what she thought was cocaine, but turned out to be cheese.

Jessice Sandy Booth, 18, hatched the plot after she visited the home of the men, and mistook queso fresco – a white, crumbly cheese common in Mexican cuisine.

But the hit man she hired turned out to be an undercover police officer.

“They asked her numerous times ‘Do you really want to go through with this?'” prosecutor Paul Hagerman said. “They gave her numerous chances to back out, but she said she was serious. She said she needed the money for modeling school.”‘

Student Killed in Abseil Stunt to Impress Girlfriend

`A college student fell to his death on Thursday while scaling the wall of an apartment building to impress his girlfriend. The 20-year-old freshman identified as Lee was found lying in the parking lot of a six-story building in Dongseon-dong in Seoul at around 3:20 p.m. on Thursday. The parking attendant called an ambulance but Lee succumbed to his injuries in hospital six hours later.

The parking attendant said he was alerted by hearing a thump in the parking lot to find a young man bleeding from his head and mouth.

Man Angry About Slamming Door Killed Neighbor

`It’s an unusual motive for murder. Investigators in Belleview said slamming the door drove a man to kill his next-door neighbor in Marion County.

Investigators believe Betty Shepperd was murdered over something that sounds extremely trivial. They said 45-year-old Vito Loiacono was irritated that Shepperd was slamming the door at night and waking him up.

The two allegedly argued earlier in the day and then Shepperd’s friend said she got a strange phone call from someone else in the complex.

“[The person] said, ‘The reason I’m calling you is I saw Vito coming out of Betty’s apartment.’ I said, ‘That can’t be,'” said Shepperd’s friend, Maria Folks.

Folks went to Shepperd’s apartment and found her in the bathroom, where she had been stabbed to death.

“I found the door ajar. I started yelling, ‘Betty! Betty!'”‘

Park’s 2 bears killed after bite

`Maymont employees are mourning the death of the park’s two black bears, destroyed yesterday after one of them bit a 4-year-old boy last weekend. [..]

Both bears, ages 12 and 9, were euthanized because it was not known which one bit the boy, Maymont officials said. The child and at least one parent were apparently at the rear of the 2-acre bear exhibit Saturday when the child climbed a 4-foot wooden fence into a restricted area and approached the 10-foot chain-link fence that surrounds the bears.

“The child may have been eating an apple or had apple [scent] on his hands,” said Julia Dixon, spokeswoman for Game and Inland Fisheries. The child put his hand through the fence and was bitten.’

Fake tongue studs banned

`A stick-on tongue stud which lodged in the right lung of a nine-year-old has been banned in Australia.

The stud, which sticks to the tongue via a mini suction cap instead of a piercing, is meant to be suitable for anyone over the age of seven.

The stud packaging warns against eating, drinking and doing physical activity while wearing it.

But last year, emergency surgery was performed on a nine-year-old girl in New Zealand after she inhaled the stud, lodging in her right lung.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has banned the stud and is planning to survey retailers likely to stock it to ensure the prohibition is upheld.’

Pastor blames demons, not mental illness in Plano mom’s trial

`The pastor of a charismatic Christian church attended by the Plano mother on trial, accused of fatally cutting off the arms of her 10-month-old daughter, told jurors Wednesday that mental illness is really demon possession that cannot be cured with psychiatry or medicine.

“I do not believe that any mental illness exists other than demons, and no medication can straighten it out, other than the power of God,” said Doyle Davidson, the 73-year-old minister of the Water of Life Church that Dena and John Schlosser attended several times a week.

Dena Schlosser, 37, is on trial for capital murder in the slaying of her daughter Margaret in November 2004.’

Japan’s camera phone craze spreads to funerals

`Japan’s obsession with camera-equipped mobile phones has taken a bizarre twist, with mourners at funerals now using the devices to capture a final picture of the deceased.

“I get the sense that people no longer respect the dead. It’s disturbing,” a funeral director told the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper.

At one ceremony several people gathered round the coffin and took out their phones to photograph the corpse as preparations were made to begin a cremation, she was quoted as saying.

“I’m sure the deceased would never want their faces photographed,” she said.’
