`The security advisory — a mechanism Microsoft uses to both alert users of impending threats and give them advice or workarounds to apply — repeats recommendations that most security vendors have been offering since the worm debuted two weeks ago.
It also notes that infected PCs will be in danger on Friday, Feb. 3, when the worm will overwrite several popular file formats, including those of Microsoft Office, with useless data.
But according to the team in charge of Microsoft’s Windows Software Removal Tool, that program won’t be updated until after the Friday deadline passes.’
`Police are staggered by the amount of money gullible Australians are losing to Nigerian investment scammers.
The long-running internet-based rort has netted more than $7 million from Queenslanders alone, and the loss Australia-wide is likely to be far higher, police say.
Among those being duped are financial advisers, lawyers and university professors, and one person had put $2.2 million into the hands of scammers over the past two years.’
This guy seems to have wired up absolutely everything in his house and has a page reporting stats on all the stuff going on. Interesting, but somewhat insane. 🙂
`The goons at SA are fighting with EBW because apparently they don’t give credit to authors, and host and make money from content without permission from the creators. Fortunately for me, a few of you guys found https://www.ebaumsworld.com/family.html which is an obvious plagiarism of https://www.zgeek.com/trailerparkpage/
I’ve been emailing them since I found out, and I haven’t got a reply at all yet. I even jumped on their forum, posted once about it in a nice way.. honest.” I didn’t even swear once. And I was instantly banned from the forum. (twice)’
`Users of Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s (AMD’s) microprocessors may want to think twice before looking for technical support on the company’s Web site. Customer support discussion forums on the forums.amd.com site have been compromised and are being used in an attempt to infect visitors with malicious software, an AMD spokesman confirmed Monday. [..]
Attackers have figured out a way to use AMD’s forums to deliver maliciously encoded WMF images to visitors, which are then used to install unauthorized software on the unpatched systems, he said. [..]
How the attackers were able to compromise the AMD forums is unclear. [..]’
`PC users have been urged to scan their computers before 3 February to avoid falling victim to a destructive virus.
On that date the Nyxem virus is set to delete Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Acrobat files on infected machines.
Nyxem is thought to have caught out many people by promising porn to those who open the attachments on e-mail messages carrying the virus.’

`The declassified document is called “Information Operations Roadmap”. It was obtained by the National Security Archive at George Washington University using the Freedom of Information Act. [..]
Perhaps the most startling aspect of the roadmap is its acknowledgement that information put out as part of the military’s psychological operations, or Psyops, is finding its way onto the computer and television screens of ordinary Americans.
“Information intended for foreign audiences, including public diplomacy and Psyops, is increasingly consumed by our domestic audience,” it reads.
“Psyops messages will often be replayed by the news media for much larger audiences, including the American public,” it goes on.’
`Getting your email address on the web without opening yourself up to 200 spam messages a day is a problem with many possible solutions. There doesn’t seem to be a perfect technique, but there are plenty that suffice. This is another sufficient technique that is perhaps the most esoteric and jerry-rigged of them all, but it works (in decent browsers anyway) and I haven’t seen it discussed anywhere else, so here it goes.’
`The Homeland Security Department’s internal computer network generated 65 million security alerts during a three-month period and 6.5 million of those may be linked to employees accessing pornographic words or materials, according to a report today from DHS inspector general Richard Skinner.
Nearly three-quarters of the automated “security event messages” and “detect.misuse.porn” alerts originated from 16 devices on the department’s wide area network, according to the report. However, DHS could not identify the specific workstations that had generated the messages, the inspector general found. [..]
In addition, the DHS network did not have its security accreditations and certifications, the report added.’
That’s 406,250 porn hits per device. Presumably a “device” is a router or somesuch, because that’s a fucking lot of porn for a single person.
`A Shawano probation and parole agent who was fired in 2004 for accessing Internet pornography and other inappropriate sites for hours a day over at least five months has his job back – with a raise.
He also will receive a year of back pay. [..]
The department must also pay any medical expenses for DeLeon that would have been covered by the state’s insurance plan during his yearlong absence, the arbitrator ruled. The order prohibits DeLeon from using the Internet.’
`A judge who sentenced three teenagers to probation threw them in jail after he saw them ridiculing him and drinking alcohol on a Web site.
The girls appeared before Troy District Court Judge Michael Martone last spring for drinking at their high school prom.
He gave them probation and ordered them not to drink alcohol again. [..]
But several months later he searched for his name on the Internet and came across a Web site posted by one of the students. [..]’
`This is an incomplete selection of search results which Google.cn self-censors working together with the Chinese government. Google does not censor access to the site itself, it only censors the site within the search result; access to the sites is blocked by the Chinese government.’
`In the ongoing effort against movie piracy, top providers have become gleaming targets. Largely responsible for introducing highly sought after material, top providers are a highly competitive entity that prioritize public recognition over associated risks. Earlier this morning, several top warez providers found themselves shut down at the hands of local police and the entertainment industry. [..]
Rumors of the bust began circulating online today, as members attempted to warn each other. According to warning notices online, the following top providers have, for all intents and purposes, been eliminated; RELOADED, KNIGHTS, TFCiSO, Cinemaniacs, German-Friend, ParadieseBeach and Klapsmuehle. In addition, the leader of RELOADED was reported as arrested during the raids. It should be noted however, the GVU has not confirmed the closure or arrest of anyone associated with RELOADED.’
`In this tutorial you will create a website payment gateway for content. In this example we will assume that you are selling access to a portion of a website. We will create a database to hold our login information and the payment data that Paypal returns. We will cover activation of an account within a very small system, which is a trimmed down example. To keep this tutorial brief we will not cover Paypal subscriptions or auction payments.’
One day I might start charging for access to those biphallic pictures that everyone seems to love so much. Heh. 🙂
`The adage that sex sells may have been proved this week with reports that the adult-only domain name sex.com has changed hands for the record sum of million ($18.71m).
The domain name, previously owned by entrepreneur Gary Kremen, has been snapped up by US company called Escom LLC.’
`BellSouth and Verizon have been trying to force big Web sites to pay extortion-type fees if the sites want adequate bandwidth, with Google a prime target. But Google has news for them: It won’t pay.
Google told Networking Pipeline’s Paul Kapustka in no uncertain terms that it won’t give in to the cyberextortion. And despite reports to the contrary, Google says, it isn’t talking with any carriers about the issue.
Google’s Barry Schnitt told Paul in an email: “Google is not discussing sharing of the costs of broadband networks with any carrier. We believe consumers are already paying to support broadband access to the Internet through subscription fees and, as a result, consumers should have the freedom to use this connection without limitations.”‘
‘Our mission is to provide the best possible search engine to you while at the same time, making sure the government is informed should you search for something obscure, illegal, or unpatriotic.
Instead of letting the government waste tax money by going through complicated procedures to get user and search data from Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves or Google, users of Patriot Search make sure their queries end up right where they belong — in the databases of the government and its various agencies.’

‘After being hit by a denial of service attack that downed the Million Dollar Homepage site, British student Alex Tew now faces a lawsuit from one of the advertisers on the site.
The winner of the last 1,000 pixels, which sold for US$38,100 on eBay, is threatening to sue because the Web site was offline for six days until Wednesday, the Financial Times reported in its online edition on Thursday.’

`The Bush administration on Wednesday asked a federal judge to order Google Inc. to turn over a broad range of material from its closely guarded databases. [..]
In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the records, which include a request for one million random Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period.
The Mountain View-based search engine opposes releasing the information on a variety of grounds, saying it would violate the privacy rights of its users and reveal company trade secrets, according to court documents.
Nicole Wong, an associate general counsel for Google, said the company will fight the government’s effort “vigorously.”‘
`Darren Brothers reports that Alex Polyakov, the target of his Kick a Spammer in the Nuts Daily retaliatory campaign, has cried uncle.
Brothers says he got a call early this morning from Polyakov. [..] On the tape, an excited Polyakov complains that Brothers’ “Refi Retaliator” program is “killing my business.”
“How much money do I have to pay you? Surely we can work out something together!” says Polyakov.’
`A big brown cockroach crawls across the table in the laboratory of Japan’s most prestigious university. The researcher eyes it nervously, but he doesn’t go for the bug spray. He grabs the remote. This is no ordinary under-the-refrigerator type bug. This roach has been surgically implanted with a micro-robotic backpack that allows researchers to control its movements. This is Robo-roach.
Unfortunately spammers are emailing the roaches when they broadcast to cell phones. “We had an incident last week where we sent a roach into an duct to test for an air leak, when we asked the roach to turn right, it responded by asking for our email addresses and offered to send us viagra in return.” said Assistant Professor Isao Shimoyama, head of the bio-robot research team at Tokyo University.’
`The FBI is investigating the hijacking of milliondollarhomepage.com – the website that earned $1m (£566,000) for its British creator Alex Tew by hosting micro-advertisements – by hackers who demanded a ransom to restore the site.
Mr Tew was sent a demand for $50,000 by e-mail by a hacker, believed to be Russian. When he refused, the website crashed.
The e-mail, which was made available exclusively to the Financial Times, read: “Hello u website is under us atack to stop the DDoS send us 50000$.”‘

`”This is a truly historical meeting of the established and new media,” said Les Moonves, the head of CBS, about his network’s new video partnership with Google. Um, no, Les. So far, it’s just a really crap web site.
If, like us, you expected the new and improved Google Video service to rival something like Apple’s iTunes store, then do yourself a favor and don’t visit the Google shop for a few months. Google has done nothing to celebrate its unique access to shows such as CSI, Survivor and Star Trek. Instead, the company has buried CBS’s shows beneath a dismal interface wrapped in a shambles of a delivery mechanism. [..]
Take CSI, for example. If you highlight it, only one show appears at the time of writing – an episode called “Werewolves.” Even MacGyver gets five episodes.’
