Ice ball from sky causes stir

`A giant ice cube or a gift from God?

Weather experts cannot explain what caused a microwave oven-sized block of ice to fall from the sky and shatter on the pavement outside an upmarket Douglasdale complex at 9.58am on Friday.

But the security guards who witnessed the icy object plummet to its pulpy end believe that it might have been a blessing from above.

“It came from God… because the (security guard) strike is over,” one of the men told the Saturday Star.’

Sisters lose second coming cover

`Insurers have withdrawn the cover on their virginity taken out by three sisters in the event of the second coming of Christ. [..]

Mr Burgess said: “The people were concerned about having sufficient funds if they immaculately conceived. It was for caring and bringing up the Christ. [..]

The burden of proof that it was Christ had rested with the women and any premium on the insurance was donated to charity, said Mr Burgess.

The siblings had paid £100 annually since 2000. If they had secured a payout, they stood to receive £1m.’

Lost in Translation on Papal Tour of Badges

`I guess I imagined the papal plane to be something resembling Air Force One only spiritual, like a news pilgrimage.

I imagined wrong.

The Volo Papale, as it’s known in Italian, is more like a Catholic school field trip.’

Experts Split Over ‘Bizarre’ Sexual Orientation Therapy Techniques

`Christian psychotherapist Richard Cohen, board president of the ex-homosexual education and outreach organization known as Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX), is addressing criticism leveled against certain therapy techniques he uses on clients with homosexual desires. [..]

Cohen’s methods have raised some questions, however; and he has lately taken sharp criticism over a May 23 appearance on Cable News Network (CNN), in which he demonstrated a technique that involves cuddling a male client in his lap. Another of the unusual therapy techniques depicted involved a client hitting a pillow with a tennis racket while shouting the name of a parent or other individual who elicits painful childhood memories.’

No Remorse from Suspect

`A 21-year-old suspect accused of spraying satanic graffiti on the Holy Hill National Shrine says he has no remorse. [..]

Trevey asked him why he sprayed satanic graffiti on these holy shrines.

Groth said, “’cause I’m a punk – that’s what I do.” [..]

Trevey: “Do you know you spelled Satan wrong?”
Groth: “No – I’m not aware of that.”
Trevey: “You spelled it satin – like the fabric.”
Groth: “See – if I was big into the devil, I would have spelled it right.”
Trevey: “Do you think that’s funny?”
Groth: “That I spelled it wrong? No – I’m a bad speller.”‘

The Iran Badge Hoax

`The world reacted with shock and dismay last month to the news that Iranian Jews were being forced to wear yellow badges, a policy made infamous by the Nazis. Canada’s National Post featured the story on its front page with a headline reading “Iran Eyes Badges For Jews” above a photograph of Hungarian Jews wearing yellow Stars of David from 1944. The world media quickly followed the National Post’s lead, with the reports repeated in major newspapers across the globe. The Simon Weisenthal Center confirmed the story, noting “Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis”. The Australian and Canadian Prime Ministers expressed outrage, with Stephen Harper observing that the Iranian regime was “very capable of this kind of action”.

The only problem with this story? It was a complete fabrication.’

Lion Kills Man Who Climbs In Cage, Invokes God

`A lion killed a man who climbed into its enclosure at the Kiev Zoo, police said Monday.

The lion attacked the 45-year-old Ukrainian late Sunday after he used a rope to climb down into an enclosure with four lions, said police spokesman Volodymyr Polishchuk.

Ukrainian TV channel NTN broadcast interviews with witnesses who said the man told them that he believed God would not allow the lions to hurt him.

According to Reuters, an official said, “The man shouted: ‘God will save me, if he exists,’ lowered himself by a rope into the enclosure, took his shoes off and went up to the lions.”‘

Woman Hit By Lightning While Praying

`Worried about the safety of her family during a stormy Memorial Day trip to the beach, Clara Jean Brown stood in her kitchen and prayed for their safe return as a strong thunderstorm rumbled through Baldwin County, Alabama.

But while she prayed, lightning suddenly exploded, blowing through the linoleum and leaving a blackened area on the concrete. Brown wound up on the floor, dazed and disoriented by the blast but otherwise uninjured.

She said ‘Amen’ and the room was engulfed in a huge ball of fire. The 65-year-old Brown said she is blessed to be alive.’

Fisting and God’s Will

`The biblical significance of the hand is important, because in the act of fisting, one partner (usually male) inserts his entire hand and fist into the vagina or rectum of his partner. Rather than copulating with his penis, he penetrates her with his fist. Given the powerful symbolism of the fist, it is no surprise that couples who have partaken in the practice of fisting have described it as being a profoundly spiritual experience. On a symbolic and sexual level, a wife who is fisted by her husband has the experience of surrendering completely to the divine love and power of the Lord, as embodied by her partner’s hand. The husband in turn has the experience of touching and caressing her inwardly, in such a deep and intimate manner as God touches our own souls with His grace.’

Blazing mystery is straight from the “X-Files”

`The gate at the entrance to this tiny Sicilian village has come off its hinges and swings in the wind as cats wander into homes abandoned after a series of mystery fires.

Spontaneous fires started in mid-January in the town of Canneto di Caronia, in about 20 houses. After a brief respite last month, the almost daily fires have flared up again – even though electricity to the village was cut off.

An endless flow of scientists, engineers, police and even a few self-styled “ghostbusters” have descended on the town, searching for clues to the recent spontaneous combustion of everything from fuse boxes to microwave ovens to a car.

The blazes, originally blamed on the devil, have not hurt anyone.’

Scientology nearly ready to unveil Super Power

`Matt Feshbach believes he has super powers. He senses danger faster than most people. He appreciates beauty more deeply than he used to. He says he outperforms his peers in the money management industry.

He heightened his powers of perception in 1995 when he went to Los Angeles and became the first and so far only “public” Scientologist to take a highly classified Scientology program called Super Power.

Where in L.A. did he do this?

“Just in Los Angeles,” is all Feshbach will say. Super Power is that secret.’

Housewife complains of medium’s ‘sexorcisms’

`A Malaysian housewife says a bogus spiritual medium duped her into having sex with him 51 times as the only way to exorcise her evil spirits.

The 41-year old woman, who sought the man’s help after he claimed to be able to heal her from her numerous ailments, was allegedly told that she had many evil spirits in her, the Star daily reported today.

The medium, who claims to be the reincarnation of a God, allegedly hypnotised her into having sex with him a total of 51 times over a period of six months.

The victim was also told to pay up to 50 ringgit ($A17) for each “exorcism” session.’

Is Pope poised to sanction condoms?

`The Catholic Church is on the brink of a historic change of approach over condoms which could bring hope to millions in Africa and other parts of the developing world devastated by Aids.

“We are conducting a very profound scientific, technical and moral study,” said the head of the Vatican Council for Health Pastoral Care. The church is expected to give a guarded, provisional blessing to the use of condoms by married couples when one of them suffers from Aids, as a way of protecting the health of the other partner. It is only a technical concession, based on two ancient principles, but, against the background of the stolid refusal by church authorities to countenance even the slightest deviation for more than a generation, it amounts to a revolution.

At a time when more than 40 million people are infected with HIV, and there are 13,000 new cases every day, the Vatican has been accused of contributing to the spread of the epidemic by forbidding the use of prophylactics.’

Christians Sue for Right Not to Tolerate Policies

`Ruth Malhotra went to court last month for the right to be intolerant.

Malhotra says her Christian faith compels her to speak out against homosexuality. But the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she’s a senior, bans speech that puts down others because of their sexual orientation.

Malhotra sees that as an unacceptable infringement on her right to religious expression. So she’s demanding that Georgia Tech revoke its tolerance policy.

With her lawsuit, the 22-year-old student joins a growing campaign to force public schools, state colleges and private workplaces to eliminate policies protecting gays and lesbians from harassment. The religious right aims to overturn a broad range of common tolerance programs: diversity training that promotes acceptance of gays and lesbians, speech codes that ban harsh words against homosexuality, anti-discrimination policies that require college clubs to open their membership to all.’

Dodgeball Game Leads to Assault Charges

`A youth minister was charged with assault for allegedly knocking a 16-year-old boy down and kicking him in the groin after taking a head shot from the teen in a dodgeball game.

David M. Boudreaux, 27, was charged Wednesday with one count of third-degree assault. According to court documents, the incident happened in February at Crescent Lake Christian Academy.

Authorities said the teen missed Boudreaux with one throw but then knocked the youth minister’s glasses off with the next.

The boy apologized, authorities said, but Boudreaux pushed him backward, and when the teen got up again, Boudreaux kicked him in the groin and left.’

Terrorism insurance? Many churches aren’t resting on faith alone

`To James Valverde , a risk management expert at the Insurance Information Institute in New York City , the religious xenophobia of Islamic terrorists is reason to worry.

“Given the religious fervor and underlying ideology in which this jihad is being pursued, it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility to assume that Christian churches would be on the receiving end of terrorist attacks,” he said. “It hasn’t occurred yet, but that’s not to say it couldn’t happen.”

However, that is not why insurance companies are offering churches terrorism insurance.

Reacting to Sept. 11, Congress passed the Terrorism Risk Insurance Extension Act in 2002. It required all property and casualty insurance companies to offer terrorism insurance to all clients. Clients are not obligated to buy the coverage.’

A College That’s Strictly Different

`Of Pensacola’s many rules, those dealing with male-female relationships are the most talked about. There are restrictions on when and where men and women may speak to each other. Some elevators and stairwells may be used only by women; others may be used only by men. Socializing on particular benches is forbidden. If a man and a woman are walking to class, they may chat; if they stop en route, though, they may be in trouble. Generally men and women caught interacting in any “unchaperoned area” — which is most of the campus — could be subject to severe penalties.

Those rules extend beyond the campus. A man and a woman cannot go to an off-campus restaurant together without a chaperon (usually a faculty member). Even running into members of the opposite sex off campus can lead to punishment. One student told of how a group of men and a group of women from the college happened to meet at a McDonald’s last spring. Both groups were returning from the beach (they had gone to separate beaches; men and women are not allowed to be at the beach together). The administration found out, and all 15 students were expelled.

Even couples who are not talking or touching can be reprimanded. Sabrina Poirier, a student at Pensacola who withdrew in 1997, was disciplined for what is known on the campus as “optical intercourse” — staring too intently into the eyes of a member of the opposite sex. This is also referred to as “making eye babies.” While the rule does not appear in written form, most students interviewed for this article were familiar with the concept.’

Virgin Mary tombstones full of drugs

`At the warehouse, agents found bricks of cocaine packed inside tombstones, some decorated with figures of the Virgin Mary, the DEA said.

“Like grave robbers who have no respect for the dead, this drug organization used revered tombstones to smuggle millions of dollars worth of cocaine into New York City,” said John Gilbride, the special agent in charge of the New York DEA office.

At the Brooklyn warehouse, agents found eight tombstones, five of which were packed with 20 to 25 kilograms each of cocaine. They also found remnants of smashed tombstones.’

Prayer doesn’t help heart patients in U.S.

`Having people pray for heart bypass patients had no effect on their recoveries in an American study, researchers say.

The scientists, led by Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School, emphasized that they looked only at the effect of prayer on the patients in their study – and could not address questions such as whether God exists or answers prayers.

The research, which is to be published in the April 2006 issue of the American Heart Journal, involved about 1,800 patients at six medical centres.’

‘6/6/06’ sky banner sparks concerned calls

`The most memorable moment of Terica Washington’s 30th birthday Monday was looking into the sky and seeing an airplane towing a black banner with words written in white: “6/6/06 You have been warned”.

She was alarmed enough to call the FBI.

“It made me feel really creepy, especially in this day and age,” said Washington, who works at Ocean Walk Resort. Noting that June 6 is a Tuesday, she drew the connection to Sept. 11, 2001, also a Tuesday.

“I thought it might be terrorists,” she said.’

Church ousts dominatrix from vicarage

`A South African dominatrix has given up her battle to live in a vicarage, telling the church’s congregation they can “shove” the disputed residence, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

The Pretoria News said Marianne Ellis had been renting the manse, or vicarage, at the Doornkloof Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk near Pretoria for some time when church elders discovered her sideline as a local dominatrix and asked her to move.

Ellis and her husband at first sought to fight the church in court, but Tuesday decided to back down, the newspaper said.

“It is a long story, but basically I am tired of fighting, really tired. They can take their manse back, in fact they can shove it,” she told the newspaper.’

Are birds trying to tell us things?

`Ryan Reynolds is a psittalinguist — a person who interprets budgie-speak.

Since 1999, he has invested thousands of hours slowing down and deconstructing recordings of his beloved budgie, Victor, who died five years ago at the young age of 3, as well as other talking budgies.

Victor had a vocabulary of 1,000 words, which he used in context, Reynolds says. [..]

So what are budgies saying?

“This is going to sound crazy, but they talk about spiritual things: God, the afterlife, a better world for them,” Reynolds says.’

House OKs Bible study in public high schools

`A bill that allows public high schools to offer classes on the Bible sped through the House Monday, passing overwhelmingly with no debate.

The legislation, which passed 151-7, would allow high schools to form elective courses on the history and literature of the Old Testament and New Testament eras. The classes would focus on the law, morals, values and culture of the eras. [..]

The proposal also requires that the courses should be taught “in an objective and nondevotional manner with no attempt made to indoctrinate students.”‘
